Joe learned early on from his parents about the importance of volunteer contributions to society. His mother, Maureen, was a long-time Emergency Medical Technician and Court appointed advocate for children that experienced abuse or neglect. His late father, Jim, was a youth coach and city council member. Both were active in Special Olympics as is Joe’s daughter, Lauren, today.
Joe has many years of experience coaching youth athletic teams, and also as an administrator for athletic teams serving in all aspects of program building from raising funds to developing coaching lesson plans.
He has been a long time advocate of girls and women’s athletics, specifically basketball and hockey. He has run his own girls basketball camps with all proceeds being directed to girls basketball programs. Joe just began his 9th season serving as a volunteer administrator for the New Prague Girls Hockey program.
About his volunteer coaching in youth athletics, Joe stated that the foundation of his philosophy is “the great life values that a positive athletic experience can teach: values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, responsibility and perseverance.”
